In the year 1877 George Eastman took up the new hobby of photography. This wasn’t an easy hobby. It cost a lot for the equipment and it was bulky. But …. he changed all that!!

Beyond Civilization – Humanity’s Next Great Adventure
The foundation of this book is that there is no one right way to live. The author discusses how the majority of us are convinced that there must be only one right way to live, and we are living it.
I was deeply moved reading about how he defines civilization and tribes and taking a look into history at past civilizations and tribes. I’m inspired to learn about and see ideas from a different perspective. Great book!

Wanda Gag – The Girl Who Lived to Draw
Wonderful story of the author of “Millions of Cats”. Wanda Gag’s childhood was filled with German fairy tales, musical evenings, and hours spent in her father’s painting studio. As soon as she learned to draw, she couldn’t stop and dreamed of becoming an artist.
This book is an inspiration … an inspiration for anyone with a dream! We ALL LOVED it!!

The Art of Miss Chew
I loved, loved, loved this book! Another by Patricia Polacco and this one is based on the true story of how Polacco became an artist. It’s the story of her first real art class taught by the amazing Miss Chew.
This is a heartwarming story of discovering she was an artist and the wonderful teacher who helped her discover it!

The Remarkable Story of George Moses Horton – Poet
A wonderful story about a determined man in the early 1800’s who loved words and loved poetry the best. George Moses Horton was a slave who taught himself to read, sold poetry to college students, and published several books.
All of this at a time when African-American literacy was discouraged, devalued, and even outlawed in this country. Horton was a person with talents and hopes and dreams, and a desire to be free. GREAT book!

Across a Dark and Wild Sea
Interesting book about Columcille who was born in a remote corner of Ireland in the year 521. He grew up to become a monk and a scribe. This was a thousand years before the invention of printing and books had to be copied by hand.
We really enjoy Don Brown’s books and illustrations. This one too!

A Passion for Elephants – A Real Life Adventure of Field Scientist Cynthia Moss
In this fun book we learned about Cynthia Moss who was born in 1940. She has spent the past 41 years living with and studying the elephants in Amboseli National Park in Kenya.
In 1972 she established the Amboseli Elephant Research Project in Amboseli National Park with Harvey Croze; which is 150 square miles of protected land in southern Kenya.
Great to learn about Cynthia Moss. We enjoyed this one too!

Winnie – The True Story of the Bear Who Inspired Winnie-the-Pooh
Oh my gosh! This was such a fun book to read for a brief history of Winnie and the English soldier who saved her. YES! We loved it!
