Colors of the Wind – The Story of Blind Artist and Champion Runner George Mendoza

George Mendoza has been legally blind since the age of 15 and he paints what he sees. He has a very rare form of blindness, called fundus flavimaculatus, which destroyed his central vision but left him with limited peripheral vision.

He refers to it as “kaleidoscope eyes” because of the way objects are reflected back and multiplied in his vision. Such an amazing and wonderful story! We really enjoyed learning about George Mendoza!

Catch and Release House and Hurricane Harvey

September 2 2017:

I think word is getting out that this is a catch and release house. Moths, flies, and itty bitty spiders in the house, bees on the patio (we head back inside and let them hang out) and for two days in a row, a frog. I think it’s some type of tree frog or something similar.

Yesterday morning there was one in the bathtub and tonight there was one happily jumping across the living room floor after our movie. I just can’t figure out how the frogs are getting inside.

I’ve looked up the acronym for frog and frog animal wisdom. Okay. I get the message. You can stop sending frogs …. HA! xoxoxo

More fun reading for Thomas. He reads the more typical books too. Yet, he has a wide net of interests for which he wants learn more about.

He has pretty much read every “young people’s” fiction book at the South Valleys Library (that he has an interest in reading). xoxo

Balloons Over Broadway – The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy’s Parade

“Every little movement has a meaning of its own.” ~Tony Sarg
“I have never done a stroke of work in my life.” ~Tony Sarg

Wonderful story of how the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade came to be. As a young boy, Tony Sarg loved to figure out how to make things move. He once said he became a marionette man when he was only six years old.

Tony Sarg taught himself how to carve wood, build sets, sew costumes, engineer electronics, and write plays … and had no formal art lessons. He became one of the busiest artists of his day.

Such an inspiring story and book with great illustrations! We loved it!

Book Review: Sebastian – A Book About Bach

August 19 2017:

Sebastian – A Book About Bach

from the front flap: “He heard one melody for the violin, one for the trumpet, one for the flute, and one for the oboe. Each instrument has its own voice. And when all the voices sounded at the same time, it was like good friends talking together.”

We really enjoyed reading about Bach’s early life and his family life. It was so interesting to learn that he and his wife had 20 children. And that he lived and worked in Germany all his life, never traveling more than 200 miles from his home.

We enjoyed this one!

Book Review: Far Beyond the Garden Gate

August 12 2017:

Far Beyond the Garden Gate

Story of Alexandra David-Neel, who was the most famous woman in France in the 1920’s. She was the first Western woman to enter the forbidden capital of Tibet, Lhasa.

She was a self-taught Buddhist scholar and spoke Tibetan flawlessly. Born outside Paris in 1868, she had an irresistible wanderlust and was fascinated by railway lines.

Loved learning about Alexandra David-Neel!

Book Review: It Takes a Village

July 22 2017:

This phrase has come up for me twice in the last few days. Thought it a great time to share this book we read several months ago …

It Takes a Village

A heart-warming story based on the African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child.” The story takes place at a traditional open-air market as we learn the power of a close-knit community.

Wonderful section in the back of the book with additional information about African markets. Great book!
