Book Musings: Real Love in Parenting

August 26 2017:

So much recommend this book! He also has written “Real Love” (which is a great one too) and a novel titled, “Under the Bridge”. Thomas absolutely loved Under the Bridge. It spoke to him deeply!

I also just recently wrote a blog post titled, “The One Thing We Should Be Teaching” … Excerpt ” …. Over the past several months I’ve had a couple of friends ask how homeschooling is going. Without any thought, I answered through my heart with this, “We are learning how to be …. ”

The One Thing We Should Be Teaching

Excerpt from “Real Love in Parenting” by Greg Baer, M.D. …

“It’s strange, don’t you think, that we go to such great lengths to instruct our children in subjects that most of them will never use ….. and yet we teach them nothing about the one subject – relationships – they will use every day?

Our children are not taught what human beings need most. They don’t understand how relationships work, and then we wonder why they become frustrated and angry. We wonder why they join gangs, why they can’t keep a job, why the jails are full, why more than half of all marriages fail, why people shake their fists at one another on the road, why children are abused and neglected, why relationships seem to come and go like falling leaves, why newspapers are filled with accounts of violence and war, and so on. There’s no mystery in any of this. All these things are guaranteed to happen when we don’t teach our children the basic principles of love and relationships.”

Book Review: Sebastian – A Book About Bach

August 19 2017:

Sebastian – A Book About Bach

from the front flap: “He heard one melody for the violin, one for the trumpet, one for the flute, and one for the oboe. Each instrument has its own voice. And when all the voices sounded at the same time, it was like good friends talking together.”

We really enjoyed reading about Bach’s early life and his family life. It was so interesting to learn that he and his wife had 20 children. And that he lived and worked in Germany all his life, never traveling more than 200 miles from his home.

We enjoyed this one!

Book Review: Far Beyond the Garden Gate

August 12 2017:

Far Beyond the Garden Gate

Story of Alexandra David-Neel, who was the most famous woman in France in the 1920’s. She was the first Western woman to enter the forbidden capital of Tibet, Lhasa.

She was a self-taught Buddhist scholar and spoke Tibetan flawlessly. Born outside Paris in 1868, she had an irresistible wanderlust and was fascinated by railway lines.

Loved learning about Alexandra David-Neel!

Book Review: The Untethered Soul

August 5 2017:

the untethered soul – the journey beyond yourself

Removing inner thorns and freedom, freedom, freedom ..

I read this book for the first time in March of this year. I’m now on about my 4th reading of it.

What I found interesting is that the first time I read it, I took in a few great techniques and ideas and I thought that was it. Yet, I read MIchael Singer’s second book, The Surrender Experiment, next. That book blew me away. Incredibly powerful.

Then I came back and read this one again. Unbelievable! It was like I had never read it. The words and thoughts in it were much more powerful this second time around.

This is the perfect book for anyone who has decided to remove inner thorns, pain from the past, pain from childhood, remove blocks, stop the heart closing, and to stop repeating patterns over and over and over …. anyone who is ready to walk into their own darkness and shadows, feel the pain and finally let it go, and to truly and unconditionally love oneself … love all of oneself … the light and the darkness. xoxoxo

Book Review: Tea With Milk

Tea with Milk

Beautiful watercolors illustrate this heartfelt book about the author’s mother and her journey as a young woman.

We learn about her struggles to live out her own life in the midst of Japanese formalities. We loved it! We really enjoy all of Allen Say’s books!

Book Review: It Takes a Village

July 22 2017:

This phrase has come up for me twice in the last few days. Thought it a great time to share this book we read several months ago …

It Takes a Village

A heart-warming story based on the African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child.” The story takes place at a traditional open-air market as we learn the power of a close-knit community.

Wonderful section in the back of the book with additional information about African markets. Great book!

Book Review: The Surrender Experiment

July 8 2017:

The Surrender Experiment – my journey into life’s perfection

I first read, The Untethered Soul, by this same author. I’ve since read this book twice, as well as Untethered Soul.

These were both powerful books for me. Yet, I’ll focus on this one for these comments.

True story of what happened to one man who let go of his personal preferences and simply surrendered to life, saying yes to what life presented to him. Incredibly radical way to live one’s life. A powerful story of removing oneself from the constant chatter of one’s personal preferences and accepting the present moments with a “yes”.

One would think this would lead to a miserable, unhappy life. Yet, that’s not the case for Michael Singer. The first time I read this book, I read it in one day during an entire sitting; only getting up to use the bathroom and fix food for Team TLC.

Powerful, radical, life shifting …. xoxo
