The Garden of Happiness

Another feel good book!! Yes. We love these kind! Neighbors transform an emtpy lot into a neighborhood garden. Space is limited and there’s no room left for young Marisol to plant something.

She finds a teeny tiny spot and plants one seed. It becomes the shining star of the garden! And there’s a surprise ending in this one too that may make your eyes sweat!!

Sky Sweeper

We’ve read this book a couple of times and simply love the story. Young Takeboki needs a job and wants to do something that brings him pleasure. He becomes the Flower Keeper in the temple garden.

All throughout his life, friends, family and local people urge him to move on and do something more lucrative. Yet, being a Flower Keeper continues to give him pleasure until the end of his days. Beautiful story about the joy and peace of living life as you like and doing what brings you pleasure! xoxo

Book Review: Alice Waters and the Trip to Delicious

April 29 2017:

Alice Waters and the Trip to Delicious

Wonderfully fun book about an amazing woman I’d never heard about. Alice Waters owns Chez Panisse in Berkeley, California. She also travels thousands of miles to help grow Edible Schoolyards – a concept she began in her own city.

Edible Schoolyards began in 1995 and there are gardens all over America and in twenty-nine other countries … And still growing.

Alice Waters also led the change in restaurants and how chefs operate. Instead of looking for the best recipes, they now seek the best ingredients; locally grown and flavorful.

Loved, loved, loved learning about Alice Waters and passions!

Book Review: The Champion of Children – The Story of Janusz Korczak

The Champion of Children – The Story of Janusz Korczak

Janusz Korczak had wanted to create a better world for children ever since he was a young boy. He grew up in Warsaw under tsarist Russia’s domination.

He designed and presided over an extraordinary orphanage for Jewish children. He believed the children could govern themselves, so he encouraged them to elect a parliament, run a court, and put out a weekly newspaper.

During Hitler’s rise to power he was forced to move the orphanage into Warsaw Ghetto and ultimately to the deaths of he and the children in the Treblinka extermination camp. He remained there for and with the children to the very end.

His insistence that children have the right to be loved, educated, and protected has continued to inspire people all over the world.

In honor of Korczak’s work, the United Nations declared 1979 the International Year of the Child. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, created in 1989, was strongly influenced by Korczak’s theories.

Incredible man, incredible story ….. Pure Love.

The Celebration of Life

July 22 2016:

We’re reading Norman Cousin’s book, The Celebration of Life, out loud together. When I began reading the section about mesons, atoms, the neutrino, and Galileo’s infinite instants; Thomas was glued to the book and didn’t want me to stop.

We only read a few pages a night. He loves mesons (which I have never heard of or don’t remember learning about) and when I was describing infinite instants, he yelled, “I know what that is”, before I got to the section with the term in it. I am so incredibly blessed by this young man, his spirit, his heart, his light … xoxoxo
