Book Musings: Colors of the Wind

Colors of the Wind – The Story of Blind Artist and Champion Runner George Mendoza

George Mendoza has been legally blind since the age of 15 and he paints what he sees. He has a very rare form of blindness, called fundus flavimaculatus, which destroyed his central vision but left him with limited peripheral vision.

He refers to it as “kaleidoscope eyes” because of the way objects are reflected back and multiplied in his vision. Such an amazing and wonderful story! We really enjoyed learning about George Mendoza!

Book Review: Sebastian – A Book About Bach

August 19 2017:

Sebastian – A Book About Bach

from the front flap: “He heard one melody for the violin, one for the trumpet, one for the flute, and one for the oboe. Each instrument has its own voice. And when all the voices sounded at the same time, it was like good friends talking together.”

We really enjoyed reading about Bach’s early life and his family life. It was so interesting to learn that he and his wife had 20 children. And that he lived and worked in Germany all his life, never traveling more than 200 miles from his home.

We enjoyed this one!

Book Review: If You Love Honey

April 22 2017:

If You Love Honey – Nature’s Connections

I deeply LOVED this book!! Magnificent illustrations and incredible story detailing how ALL of nature cooperates in making honey. It moves from dandelions, earthworms, mushrooms, the old oak tree and blue jays and their part in honey being available for us.

Thomas and Lillian loved it too! Further detailed information in the back of the book was great too. Plus, this book was published in Nevada City, CA! I didn’t even know there was a publishing company located there.

Dawn Publications is dedicated to inspiring in children a deeper understanding and appreciation for all life on Earth. Love, Love, Love …. I will be checking out all the books they’ve published!

Book Review: The Greatest Power

February 18 2017:

The Greatest Power

I think this is one of my favorite DEMI books. Such a powerful story of a boy emperor who gathers all the children of his kingdom so as to choose the new prime minister. He challenges each of them to show him the greatest power in the world.

He claims, “To know the greatest power in the world is to know the greatest peace.” One child reflects deeply on this while the others begin working away on their chosen answer. Thomas and Lillian loved it too, as with all DEMI books. The illustrations are simply brilliant!

Thank you to the amazing, wonderful, and oh so happy dog in the pet store who brightened my day. She was so incredibly happy and joyful. When she wagged her short, little tail; her entire body moved! I am grateful for her joy. Thank you and bring me more please!

Walking the Aisles

September 3 2016:

Library day! One of my most favorite days! I just love walking the aisles, having my eye caught by a title, pulling it from the shelf, opening it, and the feeling of excitement when it’s the one. Love, love, love. xoxo

The Celebration of Life

July 22 2016:

We’re reading Norman Cousin’s book, The Celebration of Life, out loud together. When I began reading the section about mesons, atoms, the neutrino, and Galileo’s infinite instants; Thomas was glued to the book and didn’t want me to stop.

We only read a few pages a night. He loves mesons (which I have never heard of or don’t remember learning about) and when I was describing infinite instants, he yelled, “I know what that is”, before I got to the section with the term in it. I am so incredibly blessed by this young man, his spirit, his heart, his light … xoxoxo
