January 21 2012: Library and Movie Night

Lillian having lunch! Little light reading about Albert Einstein (Famous People) (amazon affiliate link) while munching away. Then she read a great little book titled, Smart About Money: A Rich History (Smart About History) (amazon affiliate link). These two crack me up! Yes, I do purposely get them these kinds of books; but I don’t make them read ’em. They choose to read these awesome books! After she finished we headed to the library.

Team TLC is on our way to the library. Watch out, we’ve got THREE bags with us ready to load with books and movies!

One of Lillian’s favorite places. She loves going to the library. Thomas and I do too. Every 3rd Saturday, you’ll find us there!

Thomas found a nice little spot too!

South Valleys Library has a cool little path and garden area behind the library. A local Boy Scouts group built it as one of their projects years ago. I think we are just about the only people who use it. This is where you’ll find us after we’ve loaded up with books and movies!

Indulged tonight in a yummy hot dog with a side of Guinness! This was so very good!

Then it was Team TLC movie time!

January 20 2012: Math and Game Boards and Nature

Fridays are Electronics Day in our house. Thomas and Lillian can use all the electronics they want with no time limits; including DVD’s and the computer.

But, we still had to get some work done first! Lillian had a math lesson focused on units. We’re working in the Math U See program. I love the concept of this.

Thomas was assessed today in kindergarten class to prepare his report card. He did fantastic. He is reading and comprehending at an end of second grade level. His behavior has improved a great deal too. Mrs. O’Connor is so proud of him and so am I!!!!

Sitting at my next desk creating tips for my new email newsletter; turned around and Thomas was dictating a blog post to Lillian for his website. He’s at the beginning stages of learning to spell so he still needs help with that part of it. Told him I would install a program for him where he speaks it and the program will type it for him. He LOVED that!

Thomas and I played a game of Parker Brothers – Sorry (amazon affiliate link) after dinner. Board games are so nostalgic for me. I grew up playing them all the time with my cousins. We had a ball and it was my FIRST time winning against him!

After that Thomas went back to watching one of his favorite shows, Popular Mechanics for Kids: Lightning and Other Forces of Nature (amazon affiliate link). He watches this over and over. There are quite a few in the series. I can’t understand why they stopped making these. The website isn’t even around anymore. He devours them, over and over and over!

January 19 2012 – Washoe Valley Brush Fire

Finished the final edits of my book, “D iz for Different – One Woman’s Journey to Acceptance” and sent out to some test readers today! Shooting for having it in hand by my birthday on February 26th!

A wildfire in Washoe Valley took up the rest of our afternoon and early evening. It moved quickly up 395 North headed our direction. Seems to have stopped just short of our area. Both Thomas and Lillian were pretty freaked out. They happen to be looking out the sliding glass door right before we were headed out to run an errand. They both kept saying there was a fire and I kept telling them it was just dust from the wind blowing so hard. I finally realized it was a fire when I smelled the smoke.

We left to run our errand and passed police vehicles and buses that were headed to Damonte Ranch High School. The emergency alert announcements were playing on the radio and this heightened Thomas and Lillian’s worries. The upside and downside of having technology savvy kids; they were both on their devices looking up information about it and getting more freaked out! At least I know they’ll know what to do in an emergency.

I had the news on for a while on the one news channel we get as I don’t pay for any cable or satellite services. Had to turn it off as Thomas was glued to it. Little dude had his coat on, his favorite toy and had already looked online and found us a place to stay for $29! And it didn’t help when we could see the flames nearing Mt Rose Hwy!

They had both finally calmed down by bedtime. Thank Goodness! Before bed I read The Twelve Days of Christmas in Florida (Twelve Days of Christmas, State By State) (amazon affilate link) with Thomas. Fun book. Thomas read the book and he actually sang the book to the traditional “12 Days” tune. Then I read Can’t You Sleep, Little Bear? (amazon affiliate link) with Lillian. Warm and cozy book. Just right for a bedtime book.

January 18, 2012

Thomas made a tornado today at Kids Zone! He was so excited. Amazing how such simple things bring such great joy and excitement. One water bottle, some gold glitter and a little dishwashing liquid! Shake and spin!

Had a little Team TLC date at Yogurt Beach tonight! Thomas had vanilla and chocolate custard with chocolate on top and one of every topping! I had the vanilla and chocolate custard with coconut! Delicious!! Lillian doesn’t like ice cream or frozen yogurt so she had a cookie when we got home.

Before bed Thomas and I read a few pages in How Nearly Everything Was Invented (amazon affiliate link). This is an incredible book. We’ve checked it out twice from the library! Hope to get it for him one day soon!

January 15, 2012

A Team TLC Stay at Home Day! We had some strong winds . . . thought some wind pictures would be FUN!

Thomas did some origami and made a cup all by himself! This little book is great . . . Paper Magic The Art Of Origami (amazon affiliate link). We’ve also made the pinwheel and Lillian and I made a fortune teller. It’s a great little book PLUS it comes with the paper.

Then it was Family Reading Night!! One of my favorite Team TLC adventures! Movie night is my other favorite.

And before bed Thomas wrote a post titled “Things I Like Best” in which he mentioned his little stuffed animal puppy. Go Thomas Go!

January 13, 2012

Lillian worked on her motor skills . . . building strength in those little hands!

Thomas found out he was Student of the Week today! I picked up a happy and excited boy from school!

And . . . Thomas wanted to take my picture at the bank. Says he got his finger in the picture a little!

Oobleck Adventures

Thomas had a blast yesterday experimenting with the texture of just plain old corn starch and water! We picked up this book, Science Crafts for Kids: 50 Fantastic Things to Invent & Create (amazon affiliate link), from the library on our last visit. It has some really cool and fun stuff in it; but we only had the ingredients and items needed for this one experiment. I have no idea where the word oobleck came from . . . it’s what the book called this one . . .

January 8, 2012

Volcano eruptions, Tinkertoys, playing at the park and family reading night . . .

This was GREAT fun! Thomas received this, Star Wars Science – Mustafar Volcano Lab, (amazon affiliate link) as a birthday gift back in November and we just now had all the “ingredients” to conduct our volcano eruption experiments!

Team member T and L both got a set of Tinkertoys from Santa. Lillian got the Tinkertoy Classic Construction:Girls Pink 200 Pc Tinker Toy (amazon affiliate link) and Thomas got the Classic set to avoid getting them mixed up. They are absolutely loving them. Literally hours are spent building and creating with these great toys that encourage use of the imagination.

Went to the park for about an hour and played, played, played. Then home for dinner and reading night!

Love, Love, Love our Family Reading Night! An hour of quiet and all of us reading . . . pure bliss! I was reading a book titled You…, (amazon affiliate link) Thomas was reading, Scientific Progress Goes “”Boink”” (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition) (Calvin and Hobbes (Pb)) (amazon affiliate link) and Lillian was reading My Pants Are Haunted! (Dear Dumb Diary, No. 2) (amazon affiliate link). Thomas says “Scientific Progress” is funny and Lillian says “My Pants are Haunted!” is funny and good! I highly recommend “You…”. Very thin book, a quick read and useful content!
